Policy Number

IWK - 25.40 Inotrope Infusions on Cardiology Inpatient Unit

This policy pertains to DOBUTamine and milrinone: positive inotropic, high alert medications.

Milrinone and DOBUTamine will be initiated in a critical care area for appropriate patients requiring inotropic support.

Patients requiring prolonged inotropic support while awaiting or following cardiac surgery or transplant may be transferred to the cardiology inpatient unit for continued inotropic support.

The use of these medications is limited to critical care areas but may be allowed on the cardiology inpatient unit if an otherwise stable patient requires long term inotropic support but does not require critical care.

The transfer of each patient must be assessed on an individual basis.  The cardiologist will assess patient and accept transfer of care to the cardiology inpatient unit.
