Description
A patient may be admitted to an inpatient service when there are no inpatient beds available. Due to overcapacity surge plans, the patient may be required to stay in the Emergency Department for the duration of their admission until they are well enough to be discharged. The discharge takes place while the patient is in the Emergency Department.
Note: This procedure only applies to patients who are admitted to the QEII and would have been transferred to an inpatient unit if there were available beds. As a result of not having an appropriate inpatient bed, the patient receives care in the Emergency Department. This procedure does not apply to patient awaiting consults or other services in the Emergency Department.
